Context
As the global community confronts the urgent need for climate action, understanding what impacts Gen Z’s engagement is critical. At its core, positive peer pressure operates as a catalyst for sustainable behaviours among Gen Z. Peer interactions, both offline and online, share climate change attitudes, perceptions, and actions. Through social validation and normative influence, peers foster a sense of collective responsibility and empower individuals to engage in environmentally conscious practices. By understanding the psychological mechanisms and impact of diverse emotions, we aim to identify variables and factors crucial to understanding how peer pressure influences Gen Z’s climate actions.
Objectives
This report investigates the connection between peer pressure and Gen Z’s climate actions by exploring the mechanisms and instances where positive peer pressure has propelled sustainable behaviour. By examining the relationship between peer-to-peer dynamics and climate action, this report aims to identify strategies for harnessing peer pressure to foster lasting and impactful contributions to sustainability.
Methodology
In the spring of 2024, quantitative data was collected via survey responses from 281 students across the globe and quantitative data was collected through 8x hour long interviews with experts in the subject matter ranging from sustainability company leaders to professors. Additionally, the team conducted comprehensive review of relevant literature and analyzed 5 real-world case studies.
Findings
- Economic factors are both powerful barriers and incentives: reframing cost systems to account for all negative externalities can shift perceptions of sustainable choices.
- Gen Z is wary of low accessibility and convenience: improving access and lowering effort for products and programs can encourage sustainable habit uptake.
- Apathy can be overcome through social benefits: showcasing the positive societal appeal of climate-conscious actions can help get disinterested individuals on board.
- Different population segments have different needs and resources: understanding demographic differences is key to creating tailored sustainability strategies.
